What is a cinemagraph?

Have you ever seen a moving picture? If so, you have definitely seen one of cinemagraphs. It is not a vídeo, yet not a simpe photo. Usually there is a static image combined with a dynamic element which loops there creating a sense of a permanent movement. It is a very special kind of photography and is very impressive to watch. Therefore, it has its use in advertising. Static images can be affective, but they are nothing compared to a professionaly created cinemagraph.

Imagine a perfect moment in your life. Standing besides a fall, lying on a sandy beach, enjoying the wind on the coast – it is hard to transfer these moments to a single static picture without taking its charm of movement away. Cinemagraph, however, can easily preserve it. From the commercial side, advertisements containing cinemagraphs usually look way more attractive. They catch attention easily, namely because a person can’t immediately tell a picture from a vídeo here. Also, looped motions make pictures feel more interactive as everything in nature moves and they look so natural to us.

Cinemagraphs are a good choice for advertisements as they develop a story, not only show the idea. They bring a person into the picture, leave them no other choice but to be curious about the story behind them. Of course, only a professional cinemagrapgh will have such an impact.

Creating cinemagraphs

To create a cinemagraph, two major parts are necessary. One of them is a picture, another one is a static vídeo of the moving object. Later, an editor combines these parts together and loops the moving part. It is very important for the beginning and the end of the static vídeo to match, otherwise a cinemagraph will not have a smooth permanent motion. Of course, that is a thorough job to do as it involves a vídeo, not only pictures. After this, an editor has to work on the cinemagraph in a usual way. It means colour adjustment, skin improvements and healing, adding or removing objects if necessary. And then, the cinemagraph is ready to charm.
